Chaga (Tschaga)

Birch Conk – valuable medicinal and vital mushroom in the naturopathic therapy of animals.

The fruiting body of the Chaga grows on various birch species, but also on other trees such as beech, ash and elms. It is a parasitically growing fungus. You can recognize it very well by its tuberous shape and its black colouring.

This medicinal mushroom contains a multitude of valuable and medically effective ingredients. It is rich in various sterols. In addition to ergosterol and lanosterol, the valuable inotodiol, which is said to have a strong anti-cancer effect, is particularly noteworthy. In addition to polysaccharides and flavonoids (quercetin and others), the Chaga also contains various triterpenes. Betulin, a triterpene-derivative of the Lupan-type, should be emphasized above all. Betulin is the precursor of betulinic acid and is absorbed from birch by the Chaga. It has an anti-cancer effect, especially on skin cancer. In addition to various minerals and trace elements, the Chaga also contains small amounts of oxalic acid.

Certainly one of the most interesting ingredients of this medicinal mushroom is melanin, which is also often called the melanin complex in connection with the Chaga. Melanin has a strong antioxidant effect and is produced by the Chaga to protect against oxidative stress. This medicinal mushroom probably owes its beneficial effect on the skin to melanin. In particular, its protective function against UV rays should be mentioned. In addition, its use has proven to be recommended for the treatment of malignant melanoma.

In Russian folk medicine, the Chaga has been used for centuries primarily for inflammatory diseases of the stomach and intestinal tract. It is also used to treat ulcers and cancer of the digestive tract. Good results can also be achieved with a water extract from the Chaga in case of worm infestation.
