Poria cocos

The Poria cocos (pine sponge) is not given in veterinary medicine as a single mushroom, but preferably in combination with other medicinal mushrooms.

Poria cocos grows on the roots of various conifers, mainly on pines. Its appearance resembles that of a coconut, from which its colloquial name as a coconut mushroom comes. Another name is Indian bread or – in English – Indian bread. It owes its name to the American Indians who used it as food and baked a kind of bread from the Poria cocos.

This medicinal mushroom is ideal for long-term use. In traditional Chinese medicine it is used under the name Fu Ling in many herbal mixtures. In addition to ergosterol, a precursor of vitamin D2, it also contains various triterpenes and a multitude of valuable

Polysaccharides, including diuretic poriatin.

Poria cocos is used in lung diseases and in heart, liver and kidney diseases to remove moisture.

It is an excellent spleen tonic and therefore a valuable vital mushroom for spleen weakness. This is important because the spleen is one of the most important defence organs and an essential part of the immune system. In veterinary medicine, chronically ill, older animals in particular benefit from this fungus, especially if they suffer from loss of appetite, diarrhoea or fatigue.

However, the spleen is not only an organ with physical function; it is also the organ of the relationship. Negative feelings such as anxiety or melancholy weaken this important organ and thus promote further diseases. Due to its spleen-strengthening effect, this vital mushroom is particularly suitable for nervous and restless animals. In addition, it also has a blood sugar-lowering effect.
